The local switch feature creates a virtual `network switch <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch>`_ to plug virtual machines into. It functions like a real hardware switch, routing packets based on MAC addresses and without any awareness of high-level protocols. Protocols such as IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, and NetBEUI are entirely managed by the virtual machines. This connection mode does not present any connectivity to the outside world, it is an entirely isolated switch. The local switch uses multicast packets to transmit packets over your real LAN. Multiple real computers can run 86Box virtual machines connected to the same local switch.

The local switch supports a shared secret where every 86Box virtual machine connecting to the local switch must posses the same shared secret to participate. This is a useful network isolation tool. For instance, in a LAN shared by the users Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty, they might choose to use their own names as a shared secret to avoid accidentally joining in each others' networks.

Hub mode changes the functionality of the local switch into that of an `ethernet hub <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_hub>`_. The key difference is that a hub does not route packets, but instead sends all data packets to all connected devices at once. This may be useful to study network protocols, but is generally inadvisable to enable.
